Abstract
The purposes of this study were to compare psychological burden between the demented and the nondemented elderly persons¢¥ caregivers, and to find out the primary predictors of the burden. Daughters-in-law were selected as the primary caregivers in this study. Their psychological burden was measured by using the CES-D, family caregiving strain scale and a self-rated health question. Carerecipient¢¥s severity of cognitive and physical functioning perceived by the caregivers, uplift factors experienced in a caregiving situation, social support on caregivers and sociodemographic characteristics were used in the regression analysis to predict the psychological burden for caregivers. The daughters-in-law who cared for the demented parents reported more depression, more strain, and poorer health than those for the nondemented parents. For the demented parent¢¥s caregivers, uplift factors and social support were the important predictors for depression, while the year of caregiving and uplift factors were for caregiving strain.
